Maria is a classic, Dutch Luxemotor canal barge built in Holland in 1931. Constructed of riveted steel, she is 82 feet long and 16 feet wide, and she weighs over 80 tons. Unlike many barges in service today, Maria has retained her original name. She was named after the wife of her first owner, who, together with his wife, operated Maria from 1931 until 1991. For the first 60 years of her life, she carried grains, flowers and other commodities through the waterways of Holland, Belgium and France.

She was fully converted and refitted to her current high standard by her second owners in 1992. Her modification was performed by master shipwrights in Harem (Ems), Germany. From 1992 and up until the time we purchased her, she was operated as a private canal barge.

Maria's interior is luxuriously fitted with abundant amenities and finished with solid mahogany and teak. Her living room and dining area have opening skylights and ports that provide an abundance of natural light and air. She has two private double staterooms, each with its own bathroom, shower, and spacious mahogany wardrobe. One stateroom has a king size bed; the other has a queen size bed.

Maria will be your floating home for a week. She is fully furnished and provisioned with the amenities of a small home. If we don't have what you need on board, or if you forget to pack something, there will be opportunities to shop in one of the many villages or towns we will visit along the waterways.

As part of her conversion and refitting in 1992, Maria was re-powered with a new Mercedes-Benz V-6 diesel engine. In 2001, and again in 2003 and 2004, she was further upgraded with new equipment, including a bow thruster and new electrical and heating systems. Electrical power for shipboard use is provided by battery banks, a separate generator, and shore power.
